We were so impressed by the creativity and confidence showcased on the new Single, that we wanted had to learn more about this stellar artist. Joel Phil was kind enough to take the time to answer some of our questions.

I love how you manage to render your tracks so personal and immersive. Does the melody come first, or do you focus on the beat the most?

Joel Phil: Neither, ha ha! The first thing that comes to my head is the vision for the song. What do I want to say in this 3-5 minute story…then a melody comes to my head along with the lyrics simultaneously. After that, it gets all the fancy additives with the beat, delays, and whatnot.

Do you perform live? If so, do you feel more comfortable on a stage or within the walls of the recording studio?

Joel Phil: I have performed live. I have not done any original material live since I was 13 years old. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to it in the near future. There is nothing like performing live. For me, I think it makes the song more powerful and emotional because you’re feeding off the audience’s energy…and that is something that unfortunately a studio cannot provide…but you can always take a bottle of booze into a studio and pretend!

If you could only pick one song to make a “first impression” on a new listener, which song would you pick and why?

Joel Phil: I’d pick my unreleased/next song “Monster.” I think it’s a prime example of where my music is heading. The stories I want to tell. Which some are deeply personal…while others are based on experiences, observations, and reveries. However, Raise Up and its remixes are still awesome if you want to dance a little!

What does it take to be “innovative” in music?

Joel Phil: Be original. Tell your own stories. Write about things that matter to you. Don’t care about writing a “hit” – if the song is good then it’s good. Furthermore, collaborate with people that don’t necessary follow your artistic taste…sometimes a fusion of different sounds can create something beautiful. Finally and most importantly know who you are as an entertainer so that you can evolve and innovate your work!

Any upcoming release or tour your way?

Joel Phil: Yes. I am working on an album, which will be out sometime next year…and I’ll release a little something along the way to stay relevant…These days if you go away for a few weeks you’re yesterdays news!

Anywhere online where curious fans can listen to your music and find out more about you?

Joel Phil: Yes on my website www.joelphil.com You can also find all my music streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon, etc. I’m also on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook with the name JoelPhilNYC – Thank you for the questions!

This is definitely an artist that you need to WATCH CLOSELY. We are eagerly awaiting what he does next!
